What is a gimbal?

Do you know what is a gimbal? Maybe the word gimbal is unfamiliar to you. Take it easy, it’s normal. Mainly because it is a product initially created to stabilize professional cameras, but little by little it has made the leap to other markets. Read more about Best Gimbal For Phone In 2021.

Let’s say that a gimbal is simply a motorized platform that is controlled by a plate that incorporates a series of sensors in charge of stabilizing the device. The most normal thing is that it has accelerometers and a magnetic compass to detect any variation we make and change posture automatically.

In this way, by stabilizing the cell phone at all times, no matter how many movements we make while walking, for example, stable and high-quality captures are obtained. Come on, a gimbal is simply a stabilization system for the camera of a smartphone, a drone or a traditional camera.

This is where everyone’s use comes in. If, for example, you record very little video with your cell phone, such a device is not worth it. But if during the summer holidays you want to make quality videos, this gadget will be the best accessory you can have in your backpack.

We can confirm that the quality of the recordings is improving considerably. Forget about buying a very cheap model and not doing its job as it should. Therefore, and so that you are not deceived, we have prepared a compilation with the best options to consider if you are looking for a quality gimbal for your mobile phone.

How does a gimbal work?

Today, it is very common to make productions with a smartphone: whether it is music videos, vlogs, videos for YouTube, short films. The smartphone now has its place in the world of filmmaking. But then, why when you make videos on a personal basis, it never has the same effect? Quite simply because you need a smartphone stabilizer to improve the quality of your videos.

Why use a smartphone stabilizer? When you shoot videos using your smartphone, you sometimes walk, move, run or even turn and all these movements interfere with the quality of your videos. A smartphone stabilizer will allow you to eliminate any shaking or vibration from your videos, even if you make more or less sudden movements. So if you want to make incredible souvenir films of your vacation or any other production, don’t hesitate to invest in a stabilizer!

But before buying a stabilizer, there are a few things you need to learn about. First of all, you have to define your needs: are you going to use it regularly or occasionally? Do you need long-term autonomy? Do you want to create original effects such as time-lapses? Do you want them to be compatible with another type of device? waterproof? In short, all the details of your use. You’ll also need to set a budget, knowing that most smartphone stabilizers cost around a hundred dollars.

Once your needs are defined, you can take advantage of our selection of the best stabilizers for smartphones to make your choice.

3 Best Gimbal For Phone 2021

DJI OM 4 – Handheld 3-Axis Smartphone Gimbal

In the box, we find many things. This is a huge plus because you can see that DJI approached the subject in a very professional way and prepared us for many situations. There we find the main device, that is, the gimbal. Furthermore, there are also different types of phone holders (but I’ll talk about that later). We also found a tripod that we placed on the gimbal, a lot of reading (very correct instructions), a special bag for the device and a hand strap. And these last two things especially surprised me. These accessories generally need to be purchased separately. In this case, however, we have it all in the box. We can make an expedition from the place, and the gimbal will hide perfectly in a new bag.

The appearance of the DJI OM 4

The gimbal grip is darker than the rest of the device and is covered with rubber. Thanks to this, the hand will not slip, which would be possible if everything was made of plastic.

The gimbal is quite compact. When folded it has dimensions of 163 × 99.5 × 46.5mm, I was even able to slip it into my jacket pocket and it didn’t bother me. When we unfold it, its dimensions already increase considerably. Then we have a device with dimensions of 276 × 119.6 × 103.6mm to maintain. It’s not bad at all though, as it only weighs 390g and even walking with it is a problem.

The gimbal unfolds and folds very quickly. You can unfold it with one movement and hold your tripod with the other. It will only take a few seconds.

All by hand

The gimbal has well thought out buttons. At the front we find a joystick with which we control two cardan motors. The first few tries to get used to it are difficult, but over time it becomes easier to use. In addition, there are two buttons: one is responsible for starting or stopping recording, and the other performs various actions depending on the number of times you click on it. Double-clicking changes the orientation from horizontal to vertical and vice versa. Press the button three times to deactivate the platform. This button will also start it by holding it down longer.

On the left side of the gimbal, you will find a slider that will activate digital zoom. We can comfortably zoom in or out of what we are currently recording.

Connect as if by magic with your smartphone
On this model, DJI focused on quick connection with a magnet. With the gimbal we get a set of accessories with magnetic tips that will allow you to connect it to a smartphone.

The first is a metal clip that is attached to the back of the smartphone. That way, when we want to disconnect the phone, we simply “break” it from the gimbal and put it in our pocket. However, don’t forget to remove the metal clamp, as it can get lost over time.

Also, we get a magnetic holder that can be glued on the back of the smartphone. We just have to remember to attach it to the phone itself, not to the box. We have to stick it, wait twelve hours, and then we can start using it. Thanks to it, we can connect the phone whenever we want (of course, unless we are bothered by the metal disk on the back of the phone and there is no cover). So we can only stick it this way on long trips.

The magnetic mount has another function. It has a metal disk through which a finger can be passed. This solution is particularly popular in Asia, but I don’t see it very often here. I have not used it.

The last thing is stability, because will the magnet really hold our phone? The answer is yes. Not once did I doubt the strength of my grip. I was really stable.

DJI Osmo Mobile 4 Review 2021

Which smartphone for the DJI OM 4?
The gimbal’s lift capacity is also worth checking. It is capable of supporting phones that weigh 230g ± 60g, so most popular phones will hold up, but I don’t know how to deal with the “indestructibles”. Furthermore, the maximum dimensions of a compatible phone are 6.9-10mm thick and 67-84m wide.

There is no ocean. And very good! I don’t like 1000 things that do something. Because chances are high that 1000s will do it like this, and I only need three. There are literally several modes of operation in DJI OM 4. However, some are very good news, as they form a closed whole.

We have the DJI MIMO app for the gimbal. This is the same application that we use with the Mavic Mini. One of the first things we do is link the gimbal to the app.

the functions
As I mentioned, the gimbal has several modes of operation that I will try to describe. The basic elements are video and photo. I will not describe the photo (take photos). Video is the main mode for recording movies. In this mode we can use smartphone centering, digital zoom and what is called active tracking.

Active tracking
Active tracking is a tracking feature. Thanks to this, after marking the object the gimbal will focus on with a square, it will follow it. This is an ideal option for vloggers or people who want to film relationships. We set the shot on the front camera, we do active tracking on the face and that’s it.

The problem I noticed was with the revolutions. It was because she was losing sight of his “face”. In my opinion this should be handled by the software, as it is problematic when filming, for example, dancing or skating.

Dynamic zoom
Dynamic zoom is a familiar effect from Hitchcock movies. It is also used very frequently in all kinds of music videos. We have two options. Either we move it away, that is, the space becomes larger, or we bring it closer when we go directly from the large frame to the figure in the center.

Very interesting function, but requires creativity. We have to rethink the scene we want to shoot to put it to good use.

Slow-motion and hyper-lapse
As you can imagine, the two options give us very different effects. The first is the typical slow motion, that is, a strong slowdown known, for example, from the Matrix movies or from Max Payne games (I met them there: P). Perfect for recording when, for example, a dog runs towards us. The second option is a drastic acceleration, that is, we record, for example, several tens of seconds, which on film are reduced to a few. Very often, these effects are used in videos on TikTok.

The last feature is the stories. Show who DJI’s target is. It is a way to create stories on Instagram or Facebook. The gimbal itself determines its duration and offers us many possibilities. It’s false? Not in my opinion. And thanks to this device, I finally understood how to do it.

DJI OM 4. One device for everyone
I am delighted with this team. I tested them for three weeks and they flew like a whip. I’ll be filming a movie soon (they’ll see these modes live there) and I’ll have to say goodbye to it. However, I don’t think about it much.

Hohem iSteady Mobile Plus 3 Axis Handheld Smartphone Gimbal

I love making movies, but not everything works for me. This equipment is truly for everyone and the price is not lethal. 700 zlotys for such a device is not an exorbitant price in my opinion.

  • The iSteady Mobile Plus (I’ll call it iSteady in the future) gimbal is approximately 11.75 inches long and weighs (without your phone) 1 lb 1 oz. (480 g). Although it is portable and compact, it is not an accessory that fits in your pocket.
  • The iSteady is made up of a combination of parts that make up the grip and the gimbal/phone mount assembly.
  • The iSteady grip has a power button that doubles as video capture and record/stop button.
  • There are battery status lights on the side of the grip and a trigger on the back of the grip that centres the phone when pressed.

Speaking of batteries, there is a micro USB port on the side of the handle which is used to charge the isteady’s internal battery, which has 12-hour battery life.
The phone holder has rubber-lined spring jaws that require two hands and a bit of effort to pull apart to position the phone between them.

To start using this smartphone accessory, you must first place your phone on the holder and then balance it with the adjustable holder. In the image above, you can see the adjustable arm sliding in and out to balance the phone, and then the screw button holds it in place. As mentioned above, it takes two hands to get everything ready. It takes enough time to prepare iSteady for use that you probably cannot use it to capture snapshots.

The app also has a cool pan feature.

There is also a tracking feature that will let you draw a frame around a person’s face or subject, then the phone is supposed to follow the subject if it moves.

The gimbal can be set to 1 of 4 modes including pan tracking, pan / tilt tracking, all locked and all tracked. I prefer to use the Pan / Tilt tracking mode for most of my tests.

Final thoughts
For capturing smooth video while moving, walking and running, the iSteady does a great job. I also love that all the controls are on the tip of the thumb and the 12 hour battery life allows you to use this accessory for a long time before it needs to be recharged.

The only downside I have found is that it is quite heavy once you set up your phone and if you plan on using it for more than a few minutes at a time, you will start to feel the strain on your wrist. Or maybe I just have narrow wrists!

The Hohem iSteady Mobile Plus 3-Axis Stabilization Smartphone Gimbal certainly has a lot of great things going for it, including the affordable price, the quiet operation, and of course the ability to shoot smooth video. Although I find it a bit awkward to use after a few minutes, I still consider this gimbal a valuable addition to your smartphone’s camera accessory kit.

Moza Mini-MI 3-Axis Smartphone Gimbal

The Moza Mini-MI comes with everything you would expect from a smartphone gimbal. A rather stylish semi-hard plastic case, a Micro-USB charging cable, and a mini tripod. As inexpensive as they can be, I still appreciate those gimbal manufacturers include a mini tripod because they are useful for hands-free recording on a flat surface or to act as a kind of monopod when its legs are closed.

The gimbal itself is significantly larger and heavier than other gimbals I have used. It weighs 543g with battery, making it roughly 50g heavier than an average gimbal. The neck is thick and comfortable to use, but those looking for a compact gimbal may find the Mini-MI a bit large.

I also noticed that the gimbal contains a total of 3-quarter-inch threaded bolts, more than any other gimbal I’ve tried. There is one on the gimbal head, one on the back of the handle, and one on its base. This means that you will be able to connect accessories such as tripods or microphones in a variety of different configurations.

  • In terms of build quality, the Mini-MI doesn’t seem as solid as the Osmo Mobile 2 or the Freevision Vilta-M. Again, these are the best in the business when it comes to building quality, so it wouldn’t be entirely fair to make comparisons given the difference in price.
  • Mounting your iPhone or Android device on the gimbal is done in the same way as with any other smartphone gimbal. Just temporarily unlock the spring clip and slot on your phone.
  • The Mini-MI’s main feature, wireless charging, uses the Qi wireless charging standard and will therefore be compatible with almost any phone that supports wireless charging.
  • For a budget gimbal, you don’t expect the number of features from the Moza Mini-MI. In fact, in terms of features, the gimbal tastes like the beat of DJI Osmo Mobile 2.
  • Perhaps the most important feature is wireless charging. While other gimbals act as power banks, you must use one of their USB ports with a charging cable.
  • With the Mini-MI, all you need to do is mount your wireless charging compatible smartphone to charge the phone. If you are the type of person who is often low on energy, you will not find a more convenient way to charge your smartphone.
  • Another notable feature is the Mini-MI’s impressive range of motion. The Mini-MI can rotate 360 ° without problems, where other gimbals are often insufficient. This is perfect for those who want to take full panoramas.

Overall, the Moza Mini-MI is a fantastic gimbal, especially for the price. It definitely earns a spot on my list of the best gimbals for iPhone. There’s even an argument that it’s an overall better gimbal than the Osmo Mobile 2 thanks to its generous number of features.

Wireless charging and range of motion are its main strengths, although it also benefits from a high maximum payload and great flexibility in shooting modes.

To be fair, the difference is very small, but as someone who judges the value of a gimbal primarily in terms of stabilization performance, I don’t think it’s fair to call it the best gimbal for smartphones. .

Rating: 4/5

  • Wireless charging
  • Prize
  • Range of motion
  • Many shooting modes

The downsides:

  • Inexpensive build quality and image stabilization performance
  • The Moza app is not very good

Final Verdict:

After rigorously testing and grilling top-level gimbals, I picked DJI OM 4 as I found out it the best in class gimbal for Youtubers and Short movie Makers. It has everything you need for your videos to shine without shaky frames. From the flawless auto-setting, stabilizing your videos, Max Battery backup and so on.
